Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801.

The DNA of a gentleman who descends thru father-to-son relationships from Thomas Didimus Butt b. 2/15/1801 has been tested and his matches mine exactly on all 25 markers.

Here's what I have for Thomas Didimus Butt.  This is from De Vaughn's site.

About BUTT, Thomas Didimus
On the 50th Wedding anniversary, celebrated 11 March 1869, at that time they had 13 children, 71 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. After everyone was seated, at the table, an incident occurred and so characteristic of Thomas, that it provided considerable merriment. His oldest son, John W said: `Father, did you not think mother a very handsome woman fifty years ago?` Quick as a flash father answered. ` No sir; I did not. I knew so many married people parted or sued for divorce that I concluded to marry a homely woman, who could spin, mend my pants, when they needed it, milk a cow, make good butter and keep house. And sir, I succeeded and am well satisfied.`
Thomas and his wife Sarah had another set of twins that died at birth.

And here's a picture from De Vaughn's site of Thomas Didimus Butt and wife Sarah Elizabeth (Williams) Butt.  She was born January 1, 1797 in Greenbriar County, VA, as was Thomas Didimus.

The parents of Thomas Didimus are known to be Archibald and Sarah (Norris) Butt.

Some say Archibald Butt, the father of Thomas Didimus was born 1755 in Botetourt/Greenbriar County, VA and died there May 14, 1822.  The mother of Thomas Didimus Butt was Sarah Norris who some was born in 1771 in Greenbriar County, VA as well.

Below is the text of an e-mail message to me from De Vaughn who is mentioned variously elsewhere herein.

From the "1899" Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and Knox County, Munsell
Publishing Company. [Contributed by Todd Walter.]

CHARLES N. BUTT; farmer, Knox Township; born in Champaign County, Ohio,
March 10, 1833; educated in one of the log school houses of Knox County.
His parents, Thomas D. and Sarah (Williams) Butt, were born in Greenbriar
County, West Virginia. His paternal grandparents, ARCHIBALD and
SARAH (Norris) Butt, and his maternal grandparents, John and Martha (Knight)
Williams were natives of Virginia. ARCHIBALD Butt was a Drum Major in the
War of 1812, and while on a retreat was wounded in the shoulder by a shot
through his drum. December 31, 1857, Mr. Butt was married to Sarah S.
Montgomery in Knox County. The have one child, Harvey J. who is cashier in
the Farmers' National Bank of Knoxville. Harvey J. was married to Sarah
McCracken. They have one daughter, Dorris. Mr. Butt's brother, George W.,
and several of his cousins were soldiers in the War of the Rebellion. In
religion, Mr. Butt is a nominal Protestant. In politics, he is a Democrat.

Charles Norris Butt did not die till 1919 and therefore he gave the
above information for the 1899 Historical Encyclopedia. You will also Note
that his middle name is NORRIS.

This is a scan of the cover of this Encyclopedia.  Below is a cropped scan of page 870 that includes the paragraphs about Charles

.

This confirms that the parents of Thomas Didimus Butt were Archibald Butt and wife Sarah (Norris) Butt.  This couple is of the same generation as are the parents of my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt.

This book lists the deaths of both Thomas Didimus Butt and wife Sarah Norris.  They are the third and fourth names at the top of the right hand page.

Here's a document that was provided by Howard E. Butts of Martinsburg.  Was this the Archibald Butt who fathered Thomas Didimus?  At face value, this document indicates that this Archibald was born in 1764-1765.  It says he enlisted "...sometime in the year 1777.." which would have made him 12 or 13 at the time.  The Rev War ran from 1775 - 1783.  So, he would have been from 10/11 to 19/20 from the beginning to the end of the Rev War.    Obviously, this guy didn't know for sure when he was born.  I have a feeling that some of these people during this era were not really sure about dates.  I doubt that many could read and write so they really had no way other than word of mouth to keep track of such things.  I doubt too if many could do any kind of formal arithmetic.  So, I would imagine that some of these dates are approximations.....say within +/- a few years.

Any way, as Polly Horn points out, this document leads to the possible conclusion that this Archibald Butt was born in Maryland.  If that's the case, then the father of this Archibald Butt could well have been Edward Butt (aka Edward Richard), b. 1745 - d. 8/19/1779.  This document reduces the doubt stated below that the paternal grandfather of Thomas Didimus Butt was the just mentioned, Edward Butt.  This link is what is needed in order to further add to the list of men who could have been the father of Bazil Butt.

As mentioned earlier, a gentleman who descends through father-to-son relationships from the Richard Butt who founded Buttstown was located.  His DNA was tested and it does not match mine.

That John Butt and second wife Sarah Houston had a daughter named Sarah Noras (Norris) Butt seems salient.

Below is a graphic representation of some of what has been learned from DNA along with notes I've added.  Note that I have herein the middle name of Charles N. Butt as "Newton" and that De has it as "Norris".  The information in the chart comes from the grand son of Charles N. Butt, the gentleman whose DNA was tested and found to match mine exactly.

Here's part of a message I received from De Vaughn that clears up this matter.  Thank you very much De!!!!

Subject: Charles Newton vs. Charles Norris

I had noted the following paragraph in your website:

"Below is a graphic representation of some of what has been learned from DNA along with notes I've added.  Note that I have herein the middle name of Charles N. Butt as "Newton" and that De has it as "Norris".  The information in the chart comes from the grand son of Charles N. Butt, the gentleman whose DNA was tested and found to match mine exactly."

These are two different people. Charles Newton was my great Uncle. He was born 1878 in Bedford, Taylor Co., IA. He was my grandmothers brother. I knew him quite well as he died in 1952.

Now Charles Norris was born 1833 in Champaign OH. He would have been my GG Uncle. Of course he died in 1919 and I was not even around yet.

The above letter about the military service of Archibald Butt, b. 1764-1765 reduces the doubt about whether or not the paternal grandfather of Thomas Didimus Butt was Edward Butt, b. 1745.

I have more material to add to the above graphic.

Again, I have intended to included in the chart below, all the men I KNOW OF who COULD have been the father of my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt.  If that list of men can be made complete and accurate, then we can know for sure we have the name of Bazil's father.  And then perhaps, we MAY be able to finally determine which of these men was the father of Bazil.

I am agonizingly aware of the cold, hard, stark possibility that there are far more men than these who I am unaware of, who could have been Bazil's father, as well.  I have thought for a couple of decades at least, that either there existed an entire BUTT family about whom we are unaware (R. M. Green's theory, essentially), or that for some reason, Bazil Butt did not want anyone to know who his parents were.  Other highly respected researchers think we are simply looking in the wrong places, and that Bazil's parents CAN be found.  I would not be going to this trouble if I thought the latter was not the case - I'd be having fun with something else right now instead.

In the chart below I've questioned if I have the correct Archibald listed for the son of Edward Richard Butt and father of Thomas Didimus, and, if I have all the correct dates.  I am not taking issue with anyone here.  I just want to be absolutely certain that I have not made a mistake before I proceed with further DNA testing.  Any information about any of the people listed in this chart that anyone can provide will be much appreciated.  As mentioned at the outset, I have no pride in authorship.

This chart (list) of men is at the moment, the very heart of the research into determining who was the father of my gr gr grandfather, Bazil Butt.  The father of the Samuel Butt whose second wife was Fanny Brake will be among these people as well.  And if the four "nephew's" mentioned in the 1810 Berkeley County will of Richard Butt were "traditional nephews", then the father of that Richard Butt will also be among the men listed here.  I must make this list complete and absolutely true and accurate.  Again, the above letter about the military service of Archibald Butt, b. 1764-1765 reduces the doubt about whether or not Edward Butt (aka Edward Richard Butt), b. 1745 - d. 8/19/1779 was the paternal grandfather of Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801.

Here's a chart made by Bill Richardson along with the two pages of corresponding explanations.

Here's the above Richardson chart with notes I've added based mainly upon information gleaned from DNA testing.  Research of this chart continues.  We are all very lucky Mr. Richardson did all this work.
