Thomas Butt, b. 9/18/1763. Revolutionary War veteran - I sometimes call him Thomas RW.
Steven Butts of Urbana, Missouri, is a father-to-son descendant of this Thomas Butt. Here's his line.
Edward Butt, d. 1779
-Thomas Butt RW, b. 9/18/1763
-Edward Butt, b. 7/23/1813
-Benjamin Butt, b. 12/23/1853
-William Robert "Robbie" Butt(s), b. 1/26/1892
-William Hue "Billy" Butts, b. 1924
-Steven Butts
The DNA of Steven Butts has been tested. His matches mine exactly. Accordingly, my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797 was a very close genetic relative of this Thomas Butt, as were the six others whose DNA match that of Steven and me.
We have a lot of information about this guy and his family. Amy Patterson, a distant cousin has supplied me with a large amount. It's included below. But Mr. William Richardson left us all his very thorough BUTT research as well. Mr. Richardson was particularly interested in this Thomas Butt because his mother, Bertha Margaret Butts was a direct descendant of this Thomas Butt.
Mr. Richardson was particularly interested in Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801 and his parents Archibald and Sarah (Norris) Butt as well, for the same reason.
Here's the Pedigree Chart Mr. Richardson made for himself and left us. He left us two pages, I made them one by grafting page 2 to page 1. You will find Thomas Didimus Butt, his parents Archibald and Sarah (Norris) Butt, and Thomas Butt RW, b. 9/18/1763 on this chart.
You will note that Mr. Richardson listed Edward Butt, b. 1740 in Prince George's County, Maryland and wife Sophia Duvall as the parents of Thomas Butt RW, and that he lists the father of Edward Butt, b. 1740 as "a" Thomas Butt, and provides no detail about the latter.
This Thomas Butt RW, and this Archibald Butt, father of Thomas Didimus are two of the most distant of my BUTT ancestors who can be verified with DNA. They are of approximately the same generation as Reginal Butt, the father of Rignal The Hatter.
Our effort here is to somehow confirm/verify the father-to-son relationships from both/either Archibald Butt, father of Thomas Didimus, and/or Thomas Butt RW on back.
Eugene Butts had his DNA tested. His matches that of the above mentioned Steven Butts and me. Eugene is a father-to-son descendant of Archibald and wife Sarah (Norris) Butt, and Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801. Here's Eugene's line.
Archibald Butt - b. VA - wife Sarah Norris
-Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801
-Stewart McLung Butt, b. 1824
-Stewart McLung Butt(s) II, b. 2/24/1851
-Charles Newton Butts, b. 3/24/1878
-Gail Rex Butt, b. 2/29/1908
-Eugene Butts
From this we know my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797 was a very close genetic relative of Archibald Butt, the father of Thomas Didimus Butt. And of course, we know from all the above, that Archibald Butt, the father of Thomas Didimus was a very close genetic relative of Thomas Butt RW.

Here's a document that seems to confirm that the father of Thomas RW was Edward Butt. It's an Administrative Bond for Thomas Butt, Aaron Butt and Charles Duvall. Thomas Butt is named Administrator of the estate of Edward Butt. No relationships are noted in this document and therefore, it is not proof positive that the father of Thomas RW was Edward. What is does prove though is that there was "a" Thomas Butt of Prince George's County, Maryland, who on 6/12/1779, was named Administrator of the estate of "an" Edward Butt. The question is; can it now be shown in some other way that this Edward Butt and this Thomas Butt are the one's from whom Steven Butts descends?

Here's a chart I made up of some people and relationships in Colonial Maryland. The names on this chart come from a variety of sources and have been collected over many years. All the names and relationships need to be verified, re-verified and re-verified. In any event, there are some interesting names and relationships on this chart and perhaps, it will help others as it does me, to put all these people in perspective. This chart focusses on Thomas RW and the Edward Butt discussed in the "Edward Butt Estate Documents" .pdf above.

Here's a page that Garry Butt copied from a book he found in a Miami County, Indiana Library that lists Edward and others mentioned here.

Here's a partial list of BUTT men who served during the Revolutionary war. I've added to this list some information that helps me understand who these people were.
As mentioned elsewhere herein, the June, 1989, "The Berkeley Journal", Issue 13, published by the Berkeley County Historical Society in Martinsburg, W. V., included an article titled "Buttstown". This article was written by Don C. Woods. The "Buttstown" article can be found on pages 60, 61, 62 & 63 of this journal.
The illustration below includes the people mentioned in the "Buttstown" article, and their relationships to one another. I've added to that in red, some additional information.
I've added to the chart, the lines from Barrack Butt, b. 1818 and Joseph Butt, b. 12/9/1815 back to Benjamin Butt, b. between 1780 and 1790. I believe this Benjamin Butt was a son of Barrack Butt, b. 1755 as wife Dinah Butt, b. 1760, the latter of whom was a daughter of Richard and Sarah (Green) Butt, the couple who founded Buttstown.
I've also added the line from Skip Franklin (whose father changed his name) back to Richard and Sarah (Green) Butt, the couple who founded Buttstown. Skip's DNA does not match mine which means that Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797 was NOT a close genetic relative of Richard Butt who founded Buttstown.
As mentioned in the graphic above, the William Butt who on 4/20/1786 married Dorcus Butt was thought by R. M. Green and others to be a brother to Barrack Butt, the husband of Dinah. This would make sisters, Dinah and Dorcus married to brothers Barrack and William.
We are currently in the process of locating a living father-to-son descendant of Barrack Butt, b. 1755. If we can do so and test his DNA, we can know if this Barrack Butt was a close genetic relative of all those of us whose DNA match, including Thomas Butt RW, b. 9/18/1763 and Archibald Butt, the father of Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801.
Note that William and Dorcus (Butt) Butt had a son Elisha. If William did indeed have the same father as Barrack, the DNA of a descendant of this line would suffice as well to tell us if these people are close genetic relatives of Bazil and the others whose DNA match his.
Here are some documents from Amy Patterson, a distant cousin.. Thank you very my Amy!!!!

And here's yet another nifty item from Amy. As eluded to above, this one has Dorcas Butt spelled as "Batt". Interesting also is the fact that Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 and wife Fanny Brake had a son named Moses Clarke Butts born in Ohio on January 22, 1829 and died on May 2, 1889 in Paris Township Linn County, Kansas.

Here are two paragraphs from the above mentioned Berkeley Journal "Buttstown" article by Don C. Woods.
"Barick
Butt died in 1825. He left the following; Widow Dinah (Butt) Butt,
daughter Martha Butt who married Green; Son Joseph Butt who married
Elizabeth Green January 17, 1814; Son Edward, James and Benjamin and
daughter Mary (BCWB 8, p. 136).
The Buttstown article says the husband of Dorcus Butt was William Butt, that Wiliam and Dorcus were married 4/20/1786 and had a son named Elisha. These documents indicate that Dorcas was married to William Turner, b. 1749, on 2/21/1784. This must have been her first of two marriages.
As mentioned, I have other information that says that William Butt, the husband of Dorcus Butt as stated in the Buttstown article, was a brother of Barrack Butt, b. 1755. |

Here is page 98 from A Branch from The Green Tree by R. M. Green. You'll note he lists the parents of both Barrack Butt (husband of Dinah) and William Butt IV (husband of Dorcus) as Benjamine and Mary ( ? ) Butt.

Here's a 12/16/1854, Knox County, Illionis, Widow's Pension grant to "...Mary Butt, widow of Thomas Butt, who was a Musician in the Revolutionary War." The Pension was "...Eighty Eight dollars per Annum, commencing on the 3rd of February, 1853..."

Here's some more from Amy Patterson. Thank you very much Amy! First, in Amy's words, here is "...the 9-page pension application for Archibald Butt (made in 1819). It mentions his children and his wife - but not her name, darn it!"

In amy's words, this is "...the Revolutionary Pension file for Thomas Butt, with petition records of both Thomas and his wife, Mary (Polly) Taylor. An added bonus is a letter from an A.D. Hiller, who is listed only as "Assistant Administrator" - likely with the Pension Office of the War Department or National Archives in Washington to one of our apparent cousins from 1934 who's tracing the family genealogy."

Here's a chart made by Bill Richardson along with the two pages of corresponding explanations.
Here's the above Richardson chart with notes I've added based mainly upon information gleaned from DNA testing. Research of this chart continues. We are all very lucky Mr. Richardson did all this work.
Here's an array of documents from the Goodland, Kansas, Public Library about the family of Thomas Butt, b. September 18, 1763, Rev. War veteran, that is outlined in the above documents by Wm. Richardson.
