Butt Family Reunion Minutes, obituaries and other associated documents. |
From 1916 thru 1939 at least, there was held near Johnstown, Ohio an annual
reunion of the descendants of Bazil and Mahala (Green) Butt. The Minutes of
those reunions along with some associated documents are included here. There
exists an inconsistency in the dates on the documents and which annual reunion
is being discussed. The first one says "Butt reunion 1918". It is called "The
fourth annual reunion". You will note as you read thru these that mistakes in these
notes have been made. I have put some photo's that were included with this material
in the "Additional Photo's" Section. I've included in this section an array of associated
Death Certificates and U S Census forms as well.

Nancy (Blamer) Butt Death Certificate, wife of Archibald Butt (1827-1888). Her parents |
were John Blamer and Mary "Polly" Houston. The parents of Mary "Polly" Houston
were Andrew Houston and Elizabeth Green. Note here that Mary Houston is said to
have been born in PA., which lends credence to the notion that Andrew Houston may have been from PA.
This Nancy (Blamer) Butt would be my 1st cousin 3 times removed. Her mother, Mary Houston
was a sister to my gr gr grandmother, Isabella Jane Houston the latter of whom was married to
Rolla Green, a second cousin to Mahala.. Also, this Archibald Butt was a son of Isaac Butt Jr. and
wife Effa Hamilton. Isaac Butt Jr. was the son of Isaac Butt and wife Cassandra, the latter couple
of Buttstown.
The above indicates that John Blamer and wife Mary were from VA and Ohio respectively, NOT PA |
Descendants of Isaac Mitchell Jr. Isaac Mitchell Jr. was married to Louisa Blamer. Louisa |
was a daughter of John Blamer and Mary "Polly" Houston, and therefore a sister to
the above Nancy (Blamer) Butt. This document includes the note:
All others mother's birth is Ohio, NOT Penn."
|

Sarah Noras (Butt) Robbins Death Certificate. Her parents were John Butt, b. 1788 and second |
wife Sarah Houston. The above Mary "Polly" Houston was this Sarah Houston's sister. Sarah
Noras was married first to Robert Kile Needles and then to William Robbins Jr. It is said here that
John Butt was born in PA. It is ever increasingly clear that Bazil Butt may have been born in PA as well.

My father was a very, very funny man. He had an innate intelligence that was

him talk about anything and everything. He was colorful...and musical.
I begged him to write, which, fortunately for us all, he did. This section
includes some of what he wrote. He wrote a lot...I do not have it all scanned.
In time all of it will be included here. Some of what he wrote is small "r" rated
so if you're easily insulted, by "back woods" humor/jargon, you might want to
skip at least some of this section. One author described dad this way: "His background
was Southern and he was fond of West Virginian Colloquialisms." I agree.

I received the following information from Eva. Here's her email address:
She has aHufford run site that people all over this USA have contributed to over
the years. Many have found long lost family or made connection to original Christian
Hufford born 1716 in Germany and came to America. Eva has given me permission
to post this message from her and the above e-mal address. Contact Eva for
information about the Hufford family.
Hello Dennis,
I found your site while researching the Butts family in Clark County,
Missouri. I noticed that you have Jeremiah Butts family group sheet. The
Butts family line I am researching was his son Samuel Grover Butts.
I am not connected to the Butts family in any way, however one of
Samuel's daughters married into my Hufford family line.
I notice that you reported that Samuel Glover Butts died in Clark
County, Missouri, this is wrong. He died in Johnson, Scotland County, Missouri.
His probate records are in that county. Sometime between 1870 and 1880
Samuel and his wife Mary Ann (she used her middle name of Ann always) moved
from Clark County to Scotland county.
Samuel and Ann can be found in the following census.
1840 Waterloo (Madison twsp) Clark County, Missouri as Samuel G. Butts
1850 Waterloo, Clark County, Missouri as Glover Butts
1860 Waterloo, Clark County, Missouri as S.G. Butts
1870 Waterloo, Clark County, Missouri as Glove S. Butts
1880 Johnson, Scotland County, Missouri as Samuel G. ButtsThe 1860 census is as follows: S.G. Butts 41 farmer born in Ky 1819 Ann Butts 44 born in Indiana 1816 Wilson 12 born in Missouri 1848 Martha A 7 born in Missouri 1853 Virginia 6 born in Missouri 1854. Her complete name was Nancy Virg inia Butts Henry 4 born in Missouri 1856 Mary E. 9/12 born in Missouri
Only the following are in the 1870 census
Glove S. Butts (Samuel Glover) 53
Ann 53, Virginia 16 and Mary E. 10. We know that Wilson died 7-26-1869
but I haven't found when Henry died. He had to have died between 1860 and
1870.
The daughter recorded as Virginia was actually Nancy Virginia Butts or
other words Nancy V. Butts who married Zachariah Hufford on 6-18-1871 in Clark
County, Missouri. Zachariah was twice her age. And she was his third wife.
Zachariah was born 1821 in Woodford County, Ky and died 4-14-1905
Blackwater, Cooper County, Missouri. Burial in Salt Fork cemetery there.
He first married Elizabeth Rude 1-20-1842 in Scott County, Indiana. They
had 3 sons John Harvey 1844, Solomon 1847 and Israel Isaac 1852. They
divorced and Zac and the boys moved to Missouri in 1851.
Zachariah next married Mrs. Jemima (Jeremiah) Hewitt 12-30-1856 in
Clark County, Missouri. They had one daughter Rosetta Hulda Hufford
10-16-1858. Jemima died before 1870.
Then Zachariah and Nancy Virginia Butts married and had at least 2
children. Henry Thomas was born 4-22-1872 and died 7-29-1913. They had
daughter Mary E. 1879. One descendant of Henry Thomas Hufford's line said that
Zachariah and Nancy had a number of daughters but didn't know their names. In
his records he was counting Rosetta as Nancy's daughter, he was also
counting Andrew Jackson Hufford as one of their sons, however Andrew was the son
of Zachariah's youngest brother William. He had gotten confused because
Andrew is buried in the same cemetery as Zachariah. Andrew was working for
Rosetta's family in 1900 and Zachariah was also living with Rosetta and her
husband James Thomas Montgomery in Blackwater, Cooper County, Missouri.
It is unsure when Nancy Virginia Butts-Hufford died or is buried. Some
say she died right before 1900. We know by census records she was gone by
then. She could be buried in Salt Fork cemetery, there are about 11 graves
that have no headstones there.
Zachariah Hufford born September 1821 to 4-14-1905 and my great great
grandfather Andrew Jackson Hufford were brothers. They and William Hufford
were the sons of Solomon and Priscilla Hufford. William Hufford 4-7-1843 to
3-18-1903 named his son Andrew Jackson 9-24-1870 to 4-7-1905 after my
great great grandfather Andrew Jackson Hufford
Zachariah, and his parents Solomon and Priscilla and family moved from
Woodford County, Kentucky in 1821 after Solomon's father John died and
settle in Scott County, Indiana. Zachariah, Andrew , William and sister Nancy
who married James Comley moved to Missouri after their parents died in
Indiana.
I hope the little I know about your Butts family helps to fill in some
of your blanks. Take care, Eva
