Samuel Butt, b. 11/13/1797, father of Senan Butt, b. 12/14/1827.

Many years ago while visiting Johnstown, Ohio and Green Hill Cemetery I noticed this grave.  This picture was taken a couple of years ago.  At the time I first saw it, the stone in the middle was still there and readable.  It said:

Senan Butt
Son of Sam and Mary
d. 2-14-1828
Age 1 yr 2m

I had no idea who Senan Butt might have been.

The stone on the left is for Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777.  I had no idea who this Samuel Butt might have been either.

However, the stone on the far right is that of Gracey Marley and I was somewhat familiar with her and the name Marley.  Gracey Marley was the first wife of John Butt, b. between 1/1/1788 and 6/30/1788, the guy who most believe was the "nephew" John Butt named in the 1810 Berkeley County, VA/WV will of Richard Butt.  But of more significance to me at the time was that I knew Bazil and Mahala Butt had a son named Reason Marley Butt.  So this grave stuck in my mind.

This is another view of the stone of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777.

Here's another view of the stone of Gracey Marlay.

Much later while visiting R. M. Green in Florida, I asked him about this grave.  We discussed in then but a few months later as I recall I received a letter from him that included the following:

On the same plot in Green Hill with Samuel #III and Gracey, is the grave of a young boy named Senan Butt. The story as I now have it is, that yet another Samuel Butt who had married a woman named Mary Vanschoik and lived in Belmont Co. Ohio. They were moving to, as I recall, Union Co. O. and had gotten as far as Johnstown, when their son took sick and died.  According to the headstone this happened on Feb. 24, 1828. John Butt's first wife, Gracey, had died on July, 30, 1828, so who actually owned the cemetery plot. John Butt and his second wife Sarah Huston are buried on a different plot.

As mentioned, the first wife of this John Butt, b. 1788 was Gracey Marlay.  I do not know if she was related to the John Marlay who witnessed the above 1810 Berkeley County will of Richard Butt.  It is interesting to note that Bazil Butt and wife Mahala named their fourth child Reason Marlay (sometimes spelled "Marley").

Gracey Marlay is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Johnstown, Ohio as well.  Here's a picture of her stone.

The stone on the right in the picture below is another view of the stone of Gracey Marlay.  The stone on the left is that of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 who we know from DNA was very closely related to Bazil and others listed elsewhere herein.  The parents of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 are also unknown.

Also buried here is a boy named Senan Butt.  What remains of his stone is only the base which can be seen just to the right of the stone of Samuel Butt.  The inscription on this stone was:

Senan Butt
Son of Sam and Mary
d. 2-14-1828
Age 1 yr 2m

Accordingly, Senan's birth date was 12/1826.  Until May, 2008, some believed the father of this Senan Butt was not genetically related to Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777, but rather to the Norfolk Butt family, which we know from DNA is not genetically related to Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777.

Here's an excerpt from a letter I received from R. M. Green about the boy Senan Butt.

"The story as I now have it is, that yet another Samuel Butt who had married a woman named Mary Vanschoik and lived in Belmont Co. John Butt and his second wife Sarah Huston are buried on a different plot."

We know now (May, 2008) from the DNA test results of Gary L. Butte (test arranged by his sister Linda Essinger) who descends thru father-to-son relationships from the same male ancestors as does the boy Senan Butt, that this family was indeed, very closely related to Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777, John Butt, b. 1788, Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797, Rignal Butt, b. 1791, along with others whose DNA matches these men and are mentioned elsewhere herein.

Below is what is currently known about the family of Senan Butt.  Note the birth date of his father, Samuel Butt is such that he COULD have been the son of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 which would make Senan Butt the grandson of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777.

Here are some pictures that were supplied to me by Linda Essinger, of the family of Senan Butt.

Above is John Butt and wife Margaret Williamson, daughter of Aaron Williamson and wife Margaret Williams.  This John Butt is the son of Samuel Butt and wife Mary Vanschoyke.  As indicated above, this John Butt and Senan Butt were brothers.

Here is part of a message I received from Polly Horn about the above:

Under the picture of John and Margaret Williamson - John is the son of
Samuel Butt. We may never know who his mother was. It is possible Mary
is Samuel's second wife or it is possible John was really Mary's by
Samuel out of wedlock. Since the DNA matches, John has to be a Butt
and therefore probably related to Samuel.

On the left above is Samuel E. Butt, son of the above John and Margaret (Williamson) Butt along with wife Kate (Inbody) Butt and daughter Gertrude.  On the right is Clyde Elmer Butte son of Samuel E. and wife Kate (Inbody) Butt.  The latter of these was taken in about 1935.

These are the dates these three people died.  I've listed them here in the chronological order in which they died.  Senan was the first to be buried in this plot!!!

Senan Butt -- February 14, 1828

Gracey (Marlay) Butt -- July 30, 1828

Samuel Butt -- April 17, 1845

Here's another document that has the spelling of the boys name as "Seman" rather than Senan and his date of death as February 1, 1828 rather than February 14.

Note also the Jacob Baker who died March 11, 1837 at age 48.  This would make is birth date 1789.  I am always on the lookout for a Jacob Baker who could have been the one who hung around with Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 and the others who were known as "The Berkeley County Warriors".

I am including below some notes I've received over the years from Linda Essinger, her sister Nancy Sheldon, both of whom are gr gr granddaughters of Samuel Butt, b. 11/13/1797, Bill Childes and R. M. Green.  Gary L. Butte whose DNA was tested and found to match mine and others is a brother to Linda and Nancy.  Some of these notes are incorrect.  I am compelled though to provide them verbatim with the hope that someone might find some clue in all this that might open a new line of research.

This Samuel Butt was in Licking Co, Ohio about 1790/91.  He was also with Col. William Darke and fellow Berkeley Countians Peter Williamson, Vatchell Metcalf, Jacob Baker, and others who took part in the Battle called The Battle of Fallen Timbers.  [This is incorrect, I'm sure it should be St. Clair’s defeat which occurred on November 4, 1791.  Note added by D. Butt]

He was in Fairfield Co. O. in the later 1790s.

By Jan. l4, 1819 he was in Shepherdstown, Berkeley Co. Va. where his daughter Mary married Phillip Horn; old Samuel was their Suretor.

He also had a son Samuel Jr. b- ca 1818, who married a Sarah Evans in Ohio, d- 1886 in Delaware Co. O. and is buried in Hanover Cem. there.

(The above sentence has been found to be incorrect.  Polly Horn whose husband descends from Phillip Horn has corrected the record on this.  She has shown that this Samuel was not Samuel Butt but instead that he was Samuel Horn, son of Phillip Horn and wife Mary Butt.  It was Samuel Horn who married Sarah Evans.)

Samuel is shown in the 1820 Licking Co., Ohio Census, as a single man but landowner. On April 3, 1823 in Licking Co., Ohio, he married Fanny Brake, either sister to or daughter of Abraham Brake, formerly of Hardy Co. Va. adjacent to Berkeley Co.  To this union a family of eight children - three boys, five girls - was born.

This Samuel Butt died on April 17, 1845.  On the same plot in Green Hill with ole Samuel and Gracey, is the grave of a young boy named Senan Butt.  I’ve seen other spellings of this name e.g. Sedan. As I understand it, yet another Samuel Butt and wife Mary Vanschoik (Van Schaick), married in 1824 or 1826 in Belmount Co., were moving to, Union Co., O. and had gotten as far as Johnstown, when their son took sick and died.  According to the headstone this happened on Feb. 24, 1828.

This Samuel Butt died in 1840 and is believed to be buried in Delaware County, which is across the river from Licking County.

This Samuel Butt and wife Mary had the following children:

John - gr grandfather of Nancy Sheldon, Linda Essinger and Gary L. Butte

Senan

Simeon

Calvin

Noah

Emily

Samuel Marvin

Mary Jane

I received this from William “Bill” Childs:

Dennis,

A posting on genforum cites Probate Court Records for Samuel Butt who died in the 1840's in Licking Co., Oh:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/butt/messages/614.html

I don't know if this is a different Basil Butt yet:

same source as the other marriage records:

"Basil BUTT marr'd Mary BURRESS on 29 Oct 1814 in Montgomery Co., Md."

and this is just east of Berkeley Co., Va.

....

Bill

I copied this from the site Bill Childs mentioned above.   Nancy Sheldon is the sister of Linda Essinger and Gary L. Butte, the latter of whom had his DNA tested.

Bottom of Form 1

Probate Court Records for this Samuel Butt lists heirs as Bazil, Moses, Lydia Clark, Sarah, Nancy D. W, Mary Jane, Margaret Ann, Samuel M.D.
This Samuel Butt is buried at Green Hill Cemy. next to a child named Sedan. Sedan we believe to be the son of Samuel Butt who married Mary Van Schaick in Belmont Co. in 1824 or 1826.This Samuel died in 1840 and is supposed to be buried in Delaware County. That is across the river from Licking.  This Samuel and Mary had John, Sedan, Simeon Calvin, Noah, Emily, Samuel Marvin, and Mary Jane.  The son John is my Great grandfather who ended up in Hancock Co., Ohio.
Isaac Butt came to Licking Co from Berkley Co., W.Va., But our Samuel is supposed to descend from the Norfolk Branch of the family, however we have not been able to track him back any farther than his marriage in Belmont County. There also appear to be Butts' in Licking Co from Pennsylvania, and Basil came from Va. and was raised by his uncle Richard, along with three other Butt children. I think the four boys raised by Richard and Mary Butt all are descendants of Samuel and Elizabeth Swearingen Butt. We have been working on this line for years, so any help you might have would be appreciated.
Nancy

This message is from Linda Essinger, Nancy Sheldon’s sister.

8/28/2006

Hi,

Nancy is my oldest sister she hasn't been in very good health lately and I

don't think she has been doing much work on the family tree.

I didn't know Bob [Note added by D. Butt - she’s referring to R. M. Green] had died, but guess he had to be getting up there in years. We shared quite a few letters back and forth over the years.  I even purchased his Green Tree hoping I would come up with something solid on the families.

My Grandfather is Samuel Butt, son of John Butt and Margaret Ellen Williamson [I wonder if this is the same Williamson family that hung around with the GREEN’s and BUTT’s] Butt, John is the oldest son of Samuel Butt but he was born before the marriage

date to Mary VanScoick (she is listed as his mother on his death cert. but it's spelled Vankoik there) Samuel and Mary were married in Belmont County, Ohio on Dec. 20, 1826 by 1830 they are in Licking County, Mary is living in Delaware County on the 1840 census her father and mother and brother also living in Delaware County, by the 1850 census she has married Joseph Wilson and all the Butt living children are listed on the 1850 census as Wilson, which made it hard to find them.

According to a desc. of John Butt's, sister Emily Butt Myers, Samuel is

buried in the Carson Cemetery, sometimes called The Stone Wall Cemetery, on the east side of the river north of Dublin.  There is no stone anymore to indicate Samuel or any other Butt children.  I have seen the one that  looked like Senan Butt in Green Hill Cem. and it wasn't far from the Samuel Butt who was buried there.  That is one reason I thought we might be related. Mary VanSchoick is the daughter of Francis Sudan [because of this spelling, the name of the boy buried next to Gracey Marlay and Samuel might be Sudan rather that Senan as my notes say, or it might be the other way round.] Vanschoick and Sarah Cree they were married in Belmont County, Ohio  in 1805, Sarah  died 5/16/1877 Franklin County, Washington Twp. Ohio.  We think this is the second child of Samuel and Mary VanSchoick Butt probably named after his Grandfather's middle name.  This cousin is also of the opinion that Samuel is the son of Robert Butt of Norfolk County, Robert son of Malaba Butt and Elizabeth Bartee.  Malaba left children Robert, William, John, Sarah, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, and Frances.  Robert and William recieved some of his land, Robert is listed as selling some land there.

Malaba and William were the sons of William Butt who was a son of William

Butt.  Williams children are Cartwright, Hillary, William, Peter, Edy, Affiah,

Betty, Rachel. and I know for a fact some of these Butt's owned land in Berkeley County W. Va.  I have the census record also think it was Hillery but would have to check.

My Samuel Butt was born Nov. 13, 1797 and died March 30, 1840, which was before the 1840 census information.  John always listed his father as being born in Va.  He is about 20 years younger then the other Samuel and more Basil and John's age.

I'll have to check my notes I have around here and get back to you.  I'm thinking John (Basils brother) had a son named Basil also seems like he died around Bellfountain.  After Samuel's (Fanny's husband) death some of his children moved to Indiana but I'll have to look that up also.

Some of the information is based on a history written by a Davis desc. John's

Sister Mary Jane Butt born July 10, 1840 married Joseph Watts Davis (which makes her birth after the death of Samuel). The cousin that I mentioned says it says in this history that Samuel's father was Robert.  I think the only Robert from Va. that he thought that was possible was Robert son of Malaba.  But I have never seen this history so have to take his word for it, but then again a lot of family historys turn out to be partly true and partly false.  I would prefer to find proof one way or the other.

My father played the fiddle, piano, and guitar.  His father Samuel played the

piano and fiddle, His father before him John played the fiddle.  My father was over 6 ft tall, his father was something like 6'2'. I have a brother about 6'1" and other one about 6'4" the youngest one is about 5'7".  Do these sound like traits that run in your family?  Have a picture of John Butt he had deep set eyes still had his hair didn't wear a mustache but has a beard that looks like its about 5 inches long.

Will do some checking in my notes and email you again.
