Rignal Butt, b. ~ 4/1/1790.

This list of marriages in Berkeley County, VA/WV is, as mentioned elsewhere, of vital importance to all BUTT family researchers.

Note the marriage here of Reginal Butt and Rebecca Fist.  This is one of the "nephews" who were raised by Richard Butt.  The Suretor here was John Fist, who was probably Rebecca's father.  This couple ultimately settled in Dayton, Ohio and their descendants became prominent citizens there.  I tracked down that family a few years ago hoping I could find a father-to-son descendant of this Reginal Butt/Rebecca Fist whose DNA I could test.  My information until March, 2008 was that this couple ultimately "daughtered out" and accordingly that there was no such male to test.

However, as you will note below this chart, Garry Lee Butt found this site and forwarded to me information that he is a direct, father-to-son (male-to-male) descendant of this Rignal Butt and his SECOND wife Phoebe Kinsey.

Here's part of an early e-mail message from Garry Lee Butt:

I am originally from Peru, In, Miami County. This is where Rignal came in 1840? from Montgomery Co. Ohio, where he met Phebe Kinsey.  How he got to Montgomery Co. is a real mystery and where he came from as well and what happened in between we just don't know.  We only have record of one daughter by his first wife who's name was Elizabeth E. b. 20 Oct 1820.  She married a William Kerschner in Dayton, Montgomery Co., 29 Nov. 1838.  She died in Miami Co., Indiana 30 July 1886.  We learned that from bkerschner@netzero.net.  Rignal's first wife was Rebecca Fiste.  That info came from "Maiden Family of Va. and Allied Families".  It is also possible that Rignal met her in Indiana because she had a brother who also lived in Miami Co. That really was a long trek from Mont. Co. in Oh to Miami Co in In, especially by Horse and wagon.

Anyway, following is the Rignal Butt in Indiana family tree:

Here are two pages Garry copied from a book in a Miami County, Indiana Genealogical Library that lists many of Garry's family members.

In an early conversation with Garry, I asked him if he'd ever heard anything about the name BAKER being associated with the BUTT family.  I received this reply from him:

Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 6:43 PM
Subject: "Baker"

Hi Dennis,
I was going thru some old emails and I found one the Tgood sent me re: Rignal.  Supposedly, his GR GR grandmother, Martha (my Aunt) said that Rignal was not a "Butt".  He was a Baker.  I just wrote him about it and asked him to respond.  I also gave him your Email address and encourage him to read 'The Quest"
Perhaps, I'll hear something soon in response.
Garry

Obviously, I'm very anxious to hear more about this.  Elsewhere in this site I mention that all the Iowa BUTT people who I ever knew who knew of Bazil Butt, ALWAYS referred to him, both verbally and in writing, as Bazil Baker Butt, as if it were all one word, i.e. BAZILBAKERBUTT.  Garry's note above is the first time I've heard anyone else mention the name BAKER in this context.  This gives credence to my life-long suspicion that Bazil was in some way, closely related to a BAKER.

Garry sent me the following information and pictures.

Note by Dennis W. Butt:  Samuel Wagoman Butt is a son of Rignal Butt, b. 1791 (thought to be a brother of Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797, John Butt, b. 1788 and Richard Butt, b. 1789, the four "nephews" raised by Richard Butt) and wife Phebe Kinsey.  If this is the case, then this Samuel Wagoman Butt was the nephew of Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797, gr gr grandfather of Dennis William Butt.

Note both Richard W. Butt and Henry K. Butt below.

The 25-marker DNA test of Garry L. Butt was completed on May 8, 2008.  Garry's DNA matches mine exactly.  Following is a list of all the men whose 25-marker tests match exactly along with their earliest known male ancestor.

Steven Butts - Thomas Butt (Rev War) b. 9/18/1763

    Cap't. Harold Butts - Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777

Kenneth Allen Butt - John Butt, b. 1788

Garry Lee Butt - Rignal Butt, b. 1791

Dennis William Butt - Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797

Eugene Butts - Thomas Didimus Butt, b. 2/15/1801

Gary L. Butte - Samuel Butt born 11-13-1797 in VA, d 3-30-1840 in OH.

IF, the above Rignal, Bazil and John were three of the four boys referred to as "my...nephews that I raised." in the 1810, Berkeley County, VA/WV will of Richard Butt, AND IF this Richard Butt was truly their "uncle" as currently commonly defined, THEN, the above John, Rignal and Bazil were sons of a brother or brothers of this Richard Butt.  At one time I thought the boys could have been sons of a sister of "uncle" Richard, but the DNA that matches other BUTT men has convinced me that the father(s) of the boys was/were a BUTT, and that he/they was/were a brother(s) of "uncle" Richard.  The parents of this Richard Butt are also unknown, as are his siblings, as are all those grave site.

A lady who descends from a Rignal Butt thought to be the one mentioned (as Rignall) in the 1810 will of Richard Butt has provided me with her family history.  As mentioned in the outset, I was attempting to find a living male who descends through father-to-son relationships from this Rignal Butt so I could have his DNA tested to see if his matches mine.  This would tell us if this Rignal Butt and my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt had a common male ancestor.  It appeared at that time that there were no living male descendants of this Rignal Butt to test.  Since then though, as mentioned above, Garry L. Butt who descends thru father-to-son relationships from Rignal has had his DNA tested and his was found to match mine exactly on all 25 markers.  All this was discussed above.

Here's more of what I know about this Rignal Butt and family.  All this came to me from the lady who I just mentioned, who also descends from this Rignal Butt.

Centennial Portrait and Biographical Record of the City of Dayton and of Montgomery County, Ohio  Pages 418-438

RIGNAL R. BUTT, [pages 423-424] prominent as a contractor and builder, of the city of Dayton, and a son of John W. and Lydia Ann (Carlisle) Butt, was born in Dayton, Ohio, September 3, 1848. His father was a native of Virginia and his mother of Maryland. They were the parents of five children—three of whom are still living, as follows: Volney H., Rignal R. and Hettie K., the wife of John Hacking.

John W. Butt was about nine years of age when brought to Dayton by his parents. Here he was educated, grew to manhood and learned his trade, that of a carpenter and contractor. Here he became a most useful and well-known citizen, and was honored by election to the city council, as a member of which he served several terms. He was also a member of the board of trustees of the water works for several years, holding this office at the time of his death. His wife died April 24, 1855, when she was but thirty-two years old, and for his second wife he married Mrs. Kittie Ann Fair, widow of John F. Fair. By this second marriage he had two children, viz: Lydia, the wife of Charles W. Gillis, and Walter L. Mrs. Fair by her first marriage had two children, Charles B., and Kittie V., the wife of Albert Smith.

Rignal Butt, the paternal grandfather of Rignal R., located in Dayton about 1830. He lived in Dayton until near the close of his life, his death occurring in Indiana while he was on a visit to that state. The maternal grandfather was a native of Maryland, descended from Scotch ancestry, and located in Dayton in the early days, dying there in 1873 when upward of eighty years of age, a well-known and highly respected citizen.

Rignal R. Butt was reared and educated in Dayton, and when about fifteen years of age began to learn the carpenter's trade. He remained at home until he was twenty years old and followed his trade until 1872, when he began taking contracts on his own account. Many of the substantial residences and other buildings in Dayton were erected by him. In his business he has been unusually successful, and he maintains an excellent standing in the business community. On the 14th of November, 1871, he was married to Miss Matilda Ray, a daughter of John Ray. By this marriage he had two children, viz: Lydia A. and Glenna, the latter dying in infancy. Lydia A. married John Utzinger, of Dayton. The mother of these children died in 1881, an excellent woman and a member of the Catholic church. Mr. Butt married for his second wife Mrs. Emma E. Deubner, the marriage taking place July 21, 1883. She was the daughter of John C. and Catherine (Zerbe) Deubner, the former of Germany, the latter of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Butt, by her first husband, Albert Patton, had one daughter. Birdie, who is now the wife of Charles Osgood. Mr. and Mrs. Osgood have one son, named Bail. Mrs. Butt is a member of the United Brethren church. Mr. Butt is a member of Dayton lodge, No. 273, I. 0. 0. F., of Dayton, and is a member of the order of Daughters of Rebekah, as is also his wife. Politically he is a republican, but cares nothing for office. Mr. Butt is one of the substantial and highly esteemed citizens of Dayton and a useful member of the community.
