Here's an 1870 Washington County, VA. U. S. Census form showing James Butt, age 41 (b. 1829) and wife Mary E. G., age 35 (b. 1835).  The occupation of James is shown as "Hatter".  It also shows living in the same household, Henry C. Butt, age 27 (b. 1843) and wife Letitia, age 26 (b. 1844).  Letitia is Latin for "joy" or "happiness".  This name was used in England in the Middle Ages.

Living next door is Rignal Butt, age 68 (b. 1802) and wife Abigail B., age 56 (b. 1814).  Abigail was Rignal's second wife.  His first was Sarah Bondurant who died 12/29/1857, age 51.  Sarah was born 10/8/1806.  Rignal's occupation is Hatter/Farmer.  In the same household is Joseph M. Butt, age 24 (b. 1846) and wife "Thirza J.", age 22 (b. 1848).  Joseph was the youngest son of Rignal and first wife Sarah Bondurant (See Vanity Page below).  The name Thryza was made famous by the British Poet/Romanticist/Revolutionary, Lord Byron in his poem titled: "Elegy on Thyrza" aka; "To Thyrza: And Thou Art Dead".  The names "Thyrza" and "Thirza" are Dutch.  There is a first name "Thryza" as well.

Here's an 1880 Washington County, VA, U. S. Census form showing James H. Butt, age 51 (b. 1829), wife Mary E. G., age 44 (b. 1836), daughter Emma A. C., age 17 (b. 1863) and sister-in-law Mary E., age 54 (b. 1826)

Living next door is Henry C. Butt, age 37 (b. 1843), wife Letitia, age 36 (b. 1844), daughter Laura A., age 12 (b. 1868), son William R., age 9 (b. 1871), daughter Sarah F., age 7 (b. 1873), son Arthur S., age 4 (b. 1876), son Charles H., age 3 (b. 1877) and daughter Elizabeth, age 7 months (b. 1879).

These verify that:

Hubert Hamilton Butt was the son of Arthur Stuart Butt

Arthur Stuart Butt was the son of Henry Clay Butt

Henry Clay Butt was the son of Rignal Butt, The Hatter, b. 8/10/1802

So, here's Bear's line:

Reginal Butt, d. ~ 1811 in Botetourt County, VA.

    - Rignal Butt - The Hatter - b. 8/10/1802 - Rignal The Hatter was an orphan; guardian was John Helms, a Methodist minister.

        - Henry Clay Butt - b. 4/15/1842

            - Arthur Stuart Butt - b. 4/15/1876

                - Hubert Hamilton Butt - b. 1920

                    - Thomas Neal "Bear" Butt

Here are two Vanity Pages from Howard Butts of Martinsburg, WV.  Note that these men were born four miles N/NW of Abingdon, VA.  There is currently a BUTTS, VA at about that same location.

Note here that the first wife of Joseph M. Butt was "Theresa J. Lyon".  In the Census form above she is listed as "Thirza J.".

I am skeptical of this Vanity Page.  It says James H. Butt was "...a son of Rignal Butt, late of Berkeley County...".  That I believe.  This Rignal Butt would have been "The Hatter", b. 8/10/1802.  It goes on to say that the father of Rignal The Hatter was "...Rignal Butt, late of...near Harpers Ferry, and came from German ancestry."  This I cannot accept.  First, we know from the DNA of Thomas Neal Butt, a father-to-son descendant of Rignal The Hatter, that Rignal The Hatter was British.  Second, there is not one trace of evidence that any of these BUTT people ever lived "near Harpers Ferry".

There is a 10/10/1815 entry in the Botetourt County Minutes that says to the effect that; Rignal The Hatter was an orphan, that his father was Reginal and that his guardian was Methodist minister, John Helms.  This would seem to be unassailable.

There is a town called Bakerton, just North of Harpers Ferry.  It was founded by a German family named BAKER.  There is no doubt that there was a BAKER "involved" with my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt.  As mentioned elsewhere, he was ALWAYS referred to both verbally and in writing by ALL his Iowa descendants as Bazil Baker Butt...and NEVER in any other way.  Further, and independently, an Aunt of Garry Lee Butt, a father-to-son descendant of Rignal Butt, b. ~ 4/1/1790 and second wife Phoebe Kinsey has said that this Rignal Butt, b. ~ 4/1/1790, was not a BUTT, and instead, he was a BAKER.  I could be convinced that there was a connection between our BUTT people and the BAKER people who founded Bakerton, VA.
