The DNA of Kenneth Allen Butt, a father-to-son descendant of John Butt, b. 1788 and 2nd wife Sarah Houston has been tested, and his matches mine exactly on all 25 markers tested.

 

Here's Kenny's line:

We have verification therefore, that this John Butt and my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt had a common male ancestor.  Specifically, we know that there is a 90+% probability that Kenny and I have a common male ancestor within the past 10 generations and that this common male ancestor was within 5 past generations of John and Bazil.

 

As noted elsewhere, Kenny's DNA matches exactly on 25 markers tested, 7 others as well.  Indeed, all nine of us who match exactly have a common male ancestor within the past 10 generations.

 

John's second wife Sarah Houston, as noted, was a daughter of Andrew Houston and wife Elizabeth Green making this Sarah Houston and Bazil's wife, Mahala (Green) Butt 1st cousins.  Sarah was a sister to Isabella Jane Houston who married Rolla Green (my gr gr grandparents), making this Sarah Houston my gr gr grand Aunt. 

 

John Butt, b. 1788 and 2nd wife Sarah Houston are buried side-by-side in Green Hill Cemetery in Johnstown, Ohio.  Here are pictures of John and Sarah's stones.

 

The tall "grayish" stone in the ~rear-center in the diagonal row of 6 stones is that of Sarah Houston.  A larger picture of that stone is below.  The two stones on either side of the tall one are those of John Butt.  Pictures of each stone on either side of the Sarah Houston stone are below.  Note the Bazil Butt stone in the foreground and Mahala's stone in the top left.

 

   

 

        

 

The center stone directly above is that of Sarah Houston.  The back side of this stone has an inscription about John Butt as well.  One must wonder if all three of these stones mark the grave of just one John Butt or if perhaps there are two or three different John Butt's buried here.  The date on the two outside stones above appear to be June 6, 1845.  But, if it's one John Butt, why three markers for him????  Maybe he was three times the man as any of the others around!!!!

Sarah Noras Butt was also married to Robert Kile Needles and had a family of three with him.

 

Here's the death certificate for Sarah (Butt) (Needles) Robbins, daughter of John Butt and Sarah Houston.  Note here that this document says that both John Butt and Sarah Houston were born in Pennsylvania.  Note too that Sarah's last name is spelled "Huston".  Sarah's father, Andrew Houston purchased three land grants in Iowa, the first in 1847.  After the death of Elizabeth (Green) Houston, Andrew moved most, if not all his children to Iowa.  A History of Jackson County, Iowa includes some of these men.  The name is spelled Houston in that book.  Also, some of these men are buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Brandon Township, Jackson County, Iowa.  The name on these stones is spelled "Houston".  There is a family in Jones County, Iowa, which borders with Jackson County, named Huston.  That family claims they are not related to the Houston.  I use the "Houston" spelling for these reasons.

As noted above, the first wife of this John Butt, b. 1788 was Gracey Marlay.  I do not know if she was related to the John Marlay who witnessed the above 1810 Berkeley County will of Richard Butt, wherein the "nephews...John, Richard, Rignall and Basill" are mentioned.  It is interesting to note that Bazil Butt and wife Mahala named their fourth child Reason Marlay (sometimes spelled "Marley").

 

Gracey Marlay is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Johnstown, Ohio as well.  Here's a picture of her stone.

 

 

The stone on the right in the picture below is another view of the stone of Gracey Marlay.  The stone on the left is that of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 who we know from DNA was very closely related to John and Bazil and others listed elsewhere herein.  The parents of Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777, as well as his birth place are also unknown.  This Samuel Butt is discussed in the "Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777" section of this site.  

 

Also buried here is a boy named Senan Butt who we know from DNA was also closely related to John, Bazil and the others.  What remains of his stone is only the base which can be seen just to the right of the stone of Samuel Butt.  The inscription on this stone was:

Below is a copy of page 116 of "A Branch from The Green Tree".  Don't mind my highlighting, etc.  Note John Butt, born Pa., and wife Sarah (?) also b. Pa.  Recall that John Butt and wife Sarah Houston had a daughter named Sarah Noras (Norris) and another named Susan Lavinia.  This may be a clue with respect to where we might find the parents of John Butt...and perhaps those of Bazil,  Samuel, b. 1/14/1777 and perhaps even the ancestors of Thomas Didimus and the others whose DNA match as well. 

 

As mentioned, the parents of Sarah Houston were Andrew Houston and Elizabeth (Green) Houston.  Andrew Houston is a mystery man as well.  His parents are unknown as is his birth place.  See the "Andrew Houston and Family" section of this site.  You will note there that the current thinking is that Andrew was from Pennsylvania.

 

 

 

Here's some more about Gracey Marlay:  She was born in 1787.  Her father was John Marlay.  I do not know her mothers name.  Gracey had at least one sibling; Margaret Marlay, b. 1790 who on April 17, 1812 in Berkeley County married Thomas Green, b. November 8, 1790 in Berkeley County - d. Nov 6 1867 in Green County, Ohio.  Thomas Green was a son of William Green and wife Ann (Butt) Green, the couple who founded Greensburg, VA. and a 1st cousin 1 time removed of Bazil's wife Mahala Green.  The Michael Marlay, b. June 21, 1797 - d. 1866 mentioned here appears to be a brother of Gracey and Margaret.  If not, then clearly, there were two John Marlay's in Berkeley County at the same time raising two separate families.

 

Here's a note I downloaded from a Marlay Site on the web:

Berkley County: Michael MARLAY was born in Berkley County on 21 June 1797 of John MARLAY or MARLEY who had taught at a university in Dublin, Ireland. (This is not substantiated) His father died when he was young and Michael was educated by an older brother according to an obit in "Ladies Repository" of 1866. The 1810 census has John in Berkely County who may have been the elder brother.

Here's page 1 of the 5 pages about Michael Marlay from the "Ladies Repository of 1866".  This states clearly that John Marlay, the father of Michael Marlay drown in 1800.  Accordingly, this John Marlay could not have been the one who witnessed the 1810 Berkeley County will of Richard Butt.  However, the above note, referring to the page below indicates, as only implied below, that there may have been an older brother named John Marlay.  This John Marlay if he did indeed exist, COULD have been the one who witness the Richard Butt will.  If anyone can clear up any of this it would be very much appreciated.

As noted, Sarah Noras Butt, daughter of John Butt and 2nd wife Sarah Houston is in the middle.  This Sarah was a sister to the above George W. Butt.

 

 

 

 

 

In the first row here, the third person (lady) from the left, sitting, is Sarah Noras (Butt) (Needles) Robbins, in her younger years.  My guess is that this picture was taken in about 1895.  That would make Sarah 57 years old in this picture.  The gentleman to her left is her second husband, William Robbins.  The others are mostly Sarah's Needle's family as follows:
