Barrack Butt, b. 1755, probably in Prince George's County Maryland...who was he?

If the information I have is correct, this Barrack Butt is my 4th great grandfather.  See the chart illustrates what I currently think is probably my line back to Richard Butt of Batchelor's Delight, b. 1680.  It may be correct on back to William Butt and George Green both of whom were born in the UK.

As you will note, the chart also includes both Barrack and wife Dinah, both of whom also seem to descend from Richard of Batchelors Delight and again, perhaps even from William of the UK.

Barrack Butt is another of the many mystery men who are being researched.  Little is known about him and much of what is known is confusing to say the least.

This is a copy of page 98 and the top of page 99 from "A Branch of The Green Tree" by R. M. Green.  Much of this is incorrect and serves to indicate how confused was even R. M. Green.  I hope some day to get this all understood and correctly published.

Barrack and Dinah are mentioned here.  Mr. Green lists Dinah as being a daughter of Archibald, the latter of whom was a son of Richard and wife Sarah (Green) Butt, the couple who founded Buttstown.

You will note also that the parents of both Barruck Butt (husband of Dinah) and William Butt IV, husband of Dorcas (Darky) are listed as Benjamine and Mary (?) Butt which means of course that Barruck and William IV were brothers.  William IV and Dorcas (Butt) Butt had a son Elisha.  Other information indicates that Dorcas was first married to William Turner who served in the Rev. war.

It is understandable why one would conclude that Dinah was the daughter of Archibald.  Upon Archibald's death, Dinah did inherit some of Archibald's land.  This is a copy of page 105 of "A Branch of The Green Tree" by R. M. Green.

As mentioned elsewhere herein, Don C. Woods of the Berkeley County, WV Historical Society authored and article titled "Buttstown".  It was

Published by the Berkeley County Historical Society in The Berkeley Journal; Issue 13, 1989; Second printing June 1998. Pages 60, 61, 62 & 63.

Below is an illustration of the various people mentioned in that article, and their relationships to one another.  You'll note that I've added some information to this chart that was not mentioned in the article.

Here we find Dinah Butt listed as a daughter of Richard and Sarah (Green) Butt, the couple who founded Buttstown.  Here Dinah is listed as being married to "Borah" or "Barak Butt".  This is the guy we're looking for.

Here's the will and some supporting documents of a Barrack B. Butt, husband of "a" Dinah.  I believe this is the Barrack Butt we're looking for.

You'll note in the above chart of the Buttstown people, that Barrack and Dinah had the following children:

    Martha Butt who married Green

Joseph Butt who married Elizabeth Green, January 17, 1814

    Edward

    James

    Benjamin

    Mary

The Edward Butt mentioned in the document directly above was a son of Barrack and Dinah.

Edmund Randal witnessed various of the wills of the siblings of Dinah Butt, Barrack's wife.  The other will's Edmund Randal witnessed included Richard Jr. and Issac.  (See the Don C. Woods  "BUTTSTOWN" article in The Berkeley Journal; Issue 13 1989.  Published by the Berkeley County Historical Society.  Second printing June 1998.)

You will note the marriage records of some of the other Buttstown people on this list as well.  This list is of vital importance to all BUTT family researchers.  Barrack is found here twice.

Here are some military documents for Barruck Butt.  These are from Amy Patterson.

Here is a transcription of Barrack's 28th day of April 1818, military pension application.

I do not know who this Jacob Butt was.

Below is a listing of BUTT people in the Rev. War. including Archibald, Baruch, Edward, Zachariah, Thomas, to which I'm added some red notes.

Below is more from Amy.

And here's yet another nifty item from Amy.  This one has Dorcas Butt spelled as "Batt".  Interesting also is the fact that Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777 and wife Fanny Brake had a son named Moses Clarke Butts born in Ohio on January 22, 1829 and died on May 2, 1889 in Paris Township Linn County, Kansas.

Here are two paragraphs from the above mentioned Berkeley Journal "Buttstown" article by Don C. Woods.

"Barick Butt died in 1825. He left the following; Widow Dinah (Butt) Butt, daughter Martha Butt who married Green; Son Joseph Butt who married Elizabeth Green January 17, 1814; Son Edward, James and Benjamin and daughter Mary (BCWB 8, p. 136).

Joseph Green and Mary his wife had purchased a small lot at the Swan Ponds from John Shipp, attorney-in-fact for Richard Morgan. This land lay where the Richard Morgan, Maxwell plantation and Claggett land joined. They sold this lot to Cassandra Butt November 8, 1821. Cassandra built a house and lived at the Swan Ponds (DB 32, p. 287). In 1851 Cassandra's children and grandchildren, who were Isaac Butt of Delaware Co., Ohio, Thomas Green Butt of Warren County, Indiana, Joseph Butt, Josina (Sarah), her brother Joseph as her guardian, Elizabeth Orr and the four children of Rachel Collins deceased who were Elizabeth Clark, Mary Myers, Joseph Collins and Harriet Crabb, sold the house and lot to John J. Welch (DB 68, p. 138). Catherine R. (Rebecca) Butt of Independence, Indiana sold her interest to J.J. Welch. Elisha Butt was a son of William and Dorcus Butt (DB 34, p. 411). The above Isaac Butt born June 1797 died 19 August 1876 in Ohio."

The Buttstown article says the husband of Dorcus Butt was William Butt, that Wiliam and Dorcus were married 4/20/1786 and had a son named Elisha.  These documents indicate that Dorcas was married to William Turner, b. 1749, on 2/21/1784.  This must have been her first of two marriages.

As mentioned, I have other information that says that William Butt, the husband of Dorcus Butt as stated in the Buttstown article, was a brother of Barrack Butt, b. 1755.

Below is an illustration of my direct BUTT/GREEN family tree as best I can determine, on back to the time my ancestors came to this continent.  I will be interested in any errors anyone might find therein.  I have recently received from Lorie Kerns a large amount of relevant information about my ancestors.  It will eliminated certain doubts I currently have stated.  I will get that material posted here soon.

I will mention in passing that the name "Darke", whether it be a nick name or not is the same as that of the Col. Willman Darke mentioned above.  I think the name "Darke" derives from the French name/word D'ark.  Perhaps there is some unknown significance here...and...perhaps there is not.  In any event, this chart is the best I can do at the moment.  I'm always looking for ways to improve it.

One more comment before moving on.  As noted elsewhere, I do not believe the maiden name of the wife of Richard Butt - 1, b. 1680 listed below was Metcalf.  I have been and will continue to refer to her as "Mary (?) (Butt) Metcalf".  It could even be that this Mary, b. 1681, could have been married to a Metcalf both prior to and after her marriage to Richard Butt, b. 1680.  As mentioned above, it is possible too that Mary's maiden name may have been Swearingen or Odell.  I am not able to make a connection between Mary (?) (Butt) Metcalf, b. 1681, wife of Richard Butt, b.1680 and the Vatchel Medcalf/Metcalf/Metcalfe/Medcalfe who had land surveyed on November 27, 1752 in Terrapin Neck.  There may be none.

I have not included in this chart, Samuel Butt, b. 1/14/1777.  It's too crowded to do so.  Please note though from his birth date that he would also, along with Archibald, the father of Thomas Didimus, and the father of Bazil Butt, be in the same row of 6 starting with Diadema Willison and ending with Martha "Patsy" Butt.  Indeed, as mentioned, the birth dates make it possible for this Samuel to have been Bazil's father.

Further, if we assume that two of the four boys mentioned in the 1810 Berkeley County will of Richard Butt were indeed, the John and Bazil Butt who settled in Licking County, Ohio, and, take this Richard Butt will at face value, then the Richard Butt who raised the four "nephews" was also a blood relative of all those we've connected with DNA testing.

Here's a chart made by Bill Richardson along with the two pages of corresponding explanations.  You'll see there is no mention of Barrack Butt here.

richardson-iv.jpg (562803 bytes)

Richardson-v.jpg (585916 bytes)

Richardson-vi.jpg (492320 bytes)

Here's the above Richardson chart with notes I've added based mainly upon information gleaned from DNA testing.  Research of this chart continues.  We are all very lucky Mr. Richardson did all this work.  I have "stuck" Barrack Butt in on the top of this chart to show where he belongs and how he relates to all others.

In January, 2009 I was provided three new pieces of information that relate to Barrack Butt and his descendants.  One is the family tree of Cynthia Lynn Butts.  Here the document that is posted on the internet.

   Cynthia Lynn Butts.pdf

This is wonderful information and I'm very happy Cynthia posted it.  From what I can tell, Cynthia and I are 5th cousins 1 time removed.

After finding Cynthia's information here, Justin Shafer provided me with the following.  I have his approval to post this information with the caveat that he's only 95% sure it is all correct.  See his approval message to me below this one.

Subject: RE: Ancestry Question

Yeah approval is okay by me, but I don’t feel 100% accurate. Maybe around 95% accurate. But I think that’s how ancestry goes…  I was at this brick wall you guys were talking about, and I found another tree that I could latch onto. I started off only knowing my grandfather, and my father didn’t know his own grandfather so it was pretty tough to do. I would have to pay ancestry.com to go over my old notes as I have hyperlinks for, but I am 95% percent sure and that is good enough for me. =)

I did come to the same conclusion as you. That John William Shafer or simply William Shaffer, had 3 wives. William was not with his last wife, and I believe he came moved too Tennessee.

I like your site, and you have a very extensive family tree. Very cool. Feel free to use any of my stuff, and I don’t know Cynthia but if you ever meet her feel free to share my info. I will email this to a guy named Tommy Biggs as he knows the DeBusks more them me.

Thanks!

-Justin

You'll note here that Cynthia has listed as her grandfather,  Floyd Edwin Butts, Sr., b. 5/13/1909 in Boise, Idaho, d. 3/1/1942 in WWII in the Pacific.  Here is a link to a site that includes more information about this Floyd Edwin Butts, Sr.

http://www.anotherangel.org/photos.cfm?mpf=frame

Ensign Floyd Edwin Butts, Sr. was my 4th cousins 1 time removed.

You'll note that the most distant BUTT/BUTTS ancestor Cynthia has listed is Joseph Butts, b. 1814 in VA and wife Martha, b. 1818 in Ohio.  This Joseph was a son of Benjamin Butt and wife Mary High.  This Benjamin Butt was the son of Barrack Butt and wife Dinah (Butt) Butt.  Below is a chart I've made up to illustrate these relationships.

The Barrack Butt listed in this chart as husband of Harriet A. Brown and as b. 1818 - d. 8/25/1854, Knox County, Illinois, is buried as is Harriet, in Trenton Cemetery which is in Persifer Township, Knox County, Illinois.  This Barrack was born in Berkeley County, VA/WV.  Harriet A. Brown was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  Barrack and Harriet were married in Licking County, Ohio.  Here is some data on this Barrack and wife Harriet.

Here's the headstone of Harriet A. (Brown) (Butt) (Lee) Howard.

This is the County and Township where Thomas Didimus Butt acquired land on 3/10/1843.  It appears as though Barrack Butt, b. 1818 moved to Knox County, Illinois at about the same time as did Thomas Didimus Butt.  Here are three maps that illustrate the location of that County and Township.  These illustrations can be found in the Thomas Didimus section as well.

You will note that the gr gr grandfather of Cynthia Lynn Butts was Simeon Butts, b 9/30/1843 in Ohio. The second bit of new information with which I was provided in January, 2009 was this link for the cowboy poetry site at Utah State University:

http://library.usu.edu/folklo/folkarchive/cowboypoetry.htm.

Two are most interesting.  In the book by Samuel Harkness titled "Horse-Thief Gulch" there is one poem titled "Simeon Butts" and another titled "Andrew Butts".  You'll note the books in this collection are not for sale.  In a reply to my email to this site, requesting information about how I could obtain a copy of this book I received the following:

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Randy Williams and Bradford Cole!!!!!  I have found another source for this book and have ordered and received it.  This book will be a nice addition to my BUTT collection.  A copy of the front cover, inside first page and the two poems are directly below these messages.

Dear Mr. Butt:

The books in our collection are not for sale. We do make photocopies of items for patrons from our holdings. Our copy/use form is found at: http://library.usu.edu/specol/reproductionform.html
However, the items you requested were relatively short, so I have typed them out for you.

From _Horse-Thief Gulch_ by Samuel Harkness. New York: J. H. Sears & Company, 1928.

"Simeon Butts" [Pages 93-4]

Simeon Butts was a drummer and called on Ike Ford monthly.
His invariable greeting,
As he swung his sample cases up to the counter, would be:
"Ike, there's a girl at Salida
Works at the Miner's Café;
She's sweeter even than this syrup I've been selling you,
And when I told her about you,
She said, 'Bring your friend Ike over.'"
His parting words would be, "There's a girl waiting over at Silverton.
Girls like Sadie always have pals--
Dust your whiskers and come along."

Ike discounted Sim's lady talk somewhat, but the grocery business
Seemed dull and envy topped the items of his order.

Next came a grocer who was Sunday School superintendent
Of the Baptist church in Tincup.
If he had to wait, Brother Butts would hum some tune with gusto
That H. Larkin would recognize
As "16 in the Red Book"
And put his Gideon Bible beside his grip, carelessly.
H. Larkin was a close buyer,
But Sim was a fellow Baptist
And eased the price of prunes to him with much religious patter:
"Our Men's Class has a hot contest
Going on--see my red button?"

H. Larkin discounted Simeon Butts' views on immersion,
But envied him the big-town stuff of contests and red buttons.

So Simeon Butts palpitated with Satanic passion
Or Apostolic zeal to suit.
He did not count himself a hypocrite, just many-sided.
His order book was the terror
Of many competitors.
H. Larkin bought a carload of coffee after Sim gave him
"Finest of the Wheat, Number 2"
With "H. Larkin" in gold letters
On the two hundred copies. Ike Ford put in a fat order
Between Sim's visits--he had met
The girl in the Miner's Café.

Sim owns a big garage in Gunnison now; tourists keep him
Jumping toward the cash register. His motor is "Service."

"Andrew Butts" [pages 95-6]

"Let every man follow his own hunch,
That's my gospel and the law I live by.
You know what civilization is?
A lot of nosey people saying, 'Don't.'
Just this morning, that red-headed girl
At the cafe says, 'Andy, overalls
Like yours make me think of sheep herders.
Don't ever change 'em.' I can't be a dude
At this business. And Sim sneaks around
Whispering, 'Don't fill your measure clear full.
A half-inch from the top will get by.'
Oil is thicker than blood with my brother."
(Time taken out for rumination.)
"I was in a blind pig in Wichita
When Carrie Nation busted 'er up.
She says, 'Boys, don't guzzle no more whiskey.'
How could we with all the bottles broke?
That was funny, but the law says it now.
Civilization! Don't it beat hell?"

These words float up,
Somewhat muffled,
From the grease pit
Where Andy oils
The nether side
Of Shorty's car.
(Shorty's absence
Is fortunate.)
Andy crawls out
With eloquence
Unabated

"I suspect you know my history:
Sim weeps over me at prayer meeting
And Amy is like a phonograph
With a needle tongue on my proud record.
But I struck ore on the Lily Dell
And Cripple Creek swarmed into Horse-thief Gulch--
Five hundred men came over the pass.
Then Mackenzie showed up and bought me out.
Fifty thousand dollars for a hunch!
In ninety days I was back in the gulch
With six dollars and my mining tools.
The other fellow had the hunch that time
And cleaned me in a crooked card game.
Of course I'd spend some on the Lily Dell
I named my claim for. There was a girl!
She died recently in the Denver jail.
We'll I'm still broke, and sixty years old,
But I'm on the track of another hunch . . . .
Back your car off the rack--here comes Sim."

I just found this site.

FOLK COLLECTION 11

The Skaggs Foundation Cowboy Poetry Collection

I am very excited. My name is Dennis W. Butt. I have researched my BUTT family for 50 years, as I and many others are currently, and as did my father and many others did before us. I think I have a Simeon Butt in my list of ancestors. I am also a life-time cowboy as was my father. My father wrote a whole book of poems himself!!!!!!!!!!

I am interested in this part of your site: Can I purchase a copy of these poems or the book they're in? It looks like the book these poems are in is titled "Horse-Thief Gulch" and that you have 2 copies. I'm not sure I'm understanding this. Anyway, if so I would appreciate knowing how to proceed. If not, is there any way I can get a copy of these two poems?

Thanks you very much,
Dennis W. Butt

P S I live in East Central Iowa in an area that was once call "The Big Woods". For many, many years, no one ventured into The Big Woods....it was just too dangerous....lotsa rattlesnakes and black bears....but also almost impossible to get thru any other way than on the rivers that run thru it. Sixty-foot limestone bluffs are common. I live on 40 acres here in The Big Woods. The county owns most of the rest of it. It's a nature area. I tell you this because in the part that's owned by the County, no more than a mile from me, there is a cave called Horse Thief Cave. Jesse James frequented that cave. It's been one of my favorite places since in can remember. Every time my father walked in that cave he'd holler: "Jesse!!!!!.....`you in here?!?!?!?!?!"

nuff for now....how can I get this book or copies of these poems.

The other new piece of information I received in January, 2009 was a link to a web site titled "Barrak T. Butt Family", by the Wilma L. (Martin) Butts mentioned in the chart above.  Here's a .pdf I downloaded from that site:

Descendants of Barrack Butt, b. 1755 From Wilma L. (Martin) Butts .pdf

While there are no dates associated with the Simeon and Andrew in the poems above, it appears as though they could have been related as follows:

Here's a link to that site:

http://ourbuttsline.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=ourbuttsline&view:9&rand:89

On this site you will find some of the information I have included in the chart above.  Most importantly, it makes a positive link for Barrack and wife Dinah (Butt) Butt down to Cynthia and others.  I'm in the process of trying to locate a living male who descends through father-to-son relationships from this Barrack Butt.  If I can do so, AND if I can get his DNA tested, we can know once for all whether or not this Barrack Butt was closely genetically related to my gr gr grandfather Bazil Butt, b. 3/13/1797.

Here is a picture of the head stone of the Joseph Butt mentioned by Cynthia in her Family Tree.pdf along with some other information.  I took this information from the Barrak T. Butt Family web site of Wilma L. (Martin) Butt.
